Randy playing in Bob's Underground Cafe

Randy Brush is a former professional musician currently living in Grinnell, Iowa.

In his professional career, he has performed in a variety of settings that have included joint concerts with the Portugese Air Force Band in the Azores Islands, performances for the White House Cabinet, outdoor concerts in Venezuela with Up With People Cast "B", and performing the "1812 Overture" under the direction of Arthur Fiedler during America's Bicentenniel Celebration. During his tenure with the Air Force Band, he was fortunate enough to study drumset with Joe LaBarbera, Bill Evan's last drummer. Joe passed down drumset teaching methods he in turn had gotten from his teacher, Alan Dawson of The Berklee College of Music. He has taught jazz drumset at the prestigious Sounds of Joy Music Studios in Manhattan, which is now part of The Drummers Collective. He has also given drumset clinics around the country for different organizations focusing on jazz styles and improvisation.

As a young man, he scored straight superior ratings three years running in California rudimental snare drum competitions, as well as being chosen for the California State Honor Band. During this period, his instructors were Myron D. Collins for snare drum , and Danlee Mitchell for concert percussion. He was also fortunate enough to play drums for a show group called "The Bright Side" led by San Diego's own Don Ward, which deeply influenced his playing style, because of Don's love of integrating the drumset and the tap dancers. Other people in the group at that time included Kelly Ward (Don's son) of "Grease" fame, and Brian Stokes-Mitchell (Tony Award Winner, "Ragtime").

On the lighter side, he attended San Diego's infamous Clairemont High School ("Fast Times at Ridgement High, look it up!) and grew up next door to comedienne Mo Gaffney for a time.

In 2005, his wife Kim's job in educational administration took them to Grinnell College in Iowa, where they would spend the next 4 years living in Loose Residence Hall with the students. Kim was recently promoted to Associate Director of Residence Life at the Grinnell College, so they will be in Iowa for at least another year.

Randy has been playing with a variety of ensembles at Grinnell College for the last four years, including the Grinnell College Percussion Ensemble, Grinnell College Symphonic Band, Grinnell College Symphonic Orchestra, and a bakers-dozen of other ensembles in support of campus musical groups. Grinnell's musical culture supports many types of groups and ideas.

Randy performed with the Triangle percussion trio

In 2008, Randy, Mark Root-Wiley, and Mallory Inman formed "Triangle", an independent percussion trio which wrote all their own music and performed frequently on the Grinnell College campus.

In 2005 he co-founded "Jazz Night" at Bobs Underground Cafe' in Grinnell, which has had a loyal following for the last four years, as well as proving a terrific training ground for young musicians looking to hone their jazz chops.
